My name is Camila Vargas.
A little bit about me – I was born in Colombia and moved to Regina when I was 12yrs old. Regina is and has been my safe place since then.
Since I was young, I have enjoyed dancing and there always seems to be a goodtime/excuse for arts to be part of my life as a way to connect with others, communicate and relief some of my stressors.
I am a social worker who had been working in different departments of child protection at MSS for the past eight years. My professional goal has been to eventually be able to incorporate the arts into my practice. In 2018, I decided to move to Germany for a year and found my current educational program – Master’s in Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) through the European Graduate School. My current "home" institute is based out of Berlin, so I continue to take courses via Zoom and during this and (hopefully) next summer I have attended summer school in Switzerland. I am in my second year and looking forward to start sharing the powerfulness of expressive arts with others as I know how they can assist in one’s journey to find various coping skills and problem-resolution through working with multiple art modalities. The art modalities I work with and not limited to are body, movement, poetry, painting/drawing, playing with sound/musical instruments, imagery, performance, and ritual. The goal of my therapy sessions is to have a resource-oriented approach which will allow each participant to engage in a creative self-expression through artistic activities. There is no artistic background/knowledge required in order to participate as we work with high sensitivity and low skill.
Currently, I am starting to work towards my practicum where I am very interested in working with groups of women over the age of 25yrs to guide them into a journey of self-discovery and self-love. Women who are currently in the workforce and are the verge of burning out or who are currently in the burning out stage. I would love to start with a small group of 4-5 women as this will be an 8week course. Each session will be around 1.5hrs on a weekday evening or a weekend morning – depending on space availability. Each session will begin with a check-in for me to know more about how they are doing and to see if there is a theme that they resonate with at this point. After this, we will then go into an artistic exploration known as Decentering where one or two art modalities will be included and I will guide the women into their artistic activity/exploration. We then will go into an aesthetic response where we will describe what we observe on the surface of each art piece without including the description of feelings. Lastly, I will guide them back to the harvesting stage where I will be asking questions that can provoke further self-exploration and a sense of belonging.
In order for me to be able to start my practicing journey and provide an opportunity for women to get to know me and my work; I would like to start with a general introduction session where I will be presenting myself to them and for them to see if they are interested in being part of this journey. I then would like to obtain a brief description of what they are looking for, their goals and longings as part of the registration phase and this will be how the 4-5 women will be selected. I really hope that this can continue moving forward and allows me the opportunity to bring a safe space to women in Regina.
The 8 sessions will be based on questions such as:
-what is the chaotic/unknown that each woman is currently facing?
-what is helping the women in the group to calm down?
-what do we mean by burnout?
-how do the women find out what is important and what is not?
-exploration of the symptoms of burnout
-how are their bodies presentation when they are/feel under stress?
-who are their supports?
-how can the community, their family, friends assist them to feel better?
-what is change and how do we cope with it in our daily lives?
After the 8weeks, I will be able to make myself available as an after-care plan on an individual basis.
For the 5 women selected, the 8+ week session will cost $250 to cover art supply and room rental costs.
